2 For Tuesday

6.5 Champs Ostrander & Little

6.0 Champs Walton & Allen

Tuesday evening at the FCC Tennis Complex proved unique!  It was the first time two finals were played back to back on the same day. The 5:30pm match featured the top-seeded team of Chris Ostrander & Maria Little against the husband/wife team of Scott and Kelly Atkins.  In the second match of the evening, another husband/wife duo, John and Erica Kelley, went to battle against Rod Walton and Susan Allen.

Both matches were very entertaining, with each being decided in straight sets.
  • C Ostrander/M Little def Scott/Kelly Atkins 6-3,6-2
  • R Walton/S Allen def John/Erica Kelley 6-1,6-2

This year’s edition of the FCC Tennis Championships is now concluded.  Thanks to all the FCC members who participated and supported the tournament. Without all of you, none of this would be possible.

First Time’s a Charm

In a match that provided numerous shifts in momentum, Bryan Little and Ries Hohman fought off a ferocious effort from Chuck Stumpp and Kendra Spears to win their first FCC Mixed Doubles title.

After trailing 0-4 and 1-5 in the opening set, the eventual champions scratched and clawed their way back to 5-all before holding to take a 6-5 lead in the set.  Finally, after nearly one hour, they were able to break serve again and grab the opening set 7-5.

As the second set began, Stumpp and Spears came out strong, looking more focused. After breaking serve to go up 3-1 they never looked back, taking the set 6-2.

With each team splitting the first two sets, the title would be decided by a Match Tie-Break -  the first  team to win 10 points. After an even start that found each team tied at 2, Little and Hohman shifted gears, looking more determined than ever, pulling ahead and winning the tie-break 10-4 to take home the title.

Each team showed great sportsmanship throughout the tense match.  Thank you to all the participants and spectators who attended this year’s 8.0 Championship.

And Then There Were Three

This Morning was the final day of matches played over the span of 3 weeks, determining the final winners of the 2019 FCC Tennis Championships.

The mother/daughter tandem of Carri and Kendra Wurm prevailed in what was undoubtedly the most athletic, entertaining match of the entire event.  The Wurm’s were winners 6-1, 6-4 over the talented team of Gail Steffen and Gina Luginbill, capturing the Ladies 6.5 Division.

Thanks to all the members and spectators who supported our small but proud annual tennis championship.  It is much appreciated.   Next year shifts back to mixed doubles, so start practicing!

2 Down, 1 To Go

Thursday night sunshine and a large crowd provided the backdrop for the 7.0 Men’s Doubles Final.  After a slow start, the team of Chris Ostrander and JD Dale prevailed 6-3,6-1.  Kevin and Max MacDonald put up a good fight and had an early 2-0 lead in the first set but couldn’t hang on.

The eventual champs gained momentum from the frost set win and played their best tennis of the evening as they rolled to a second set 6-1 win.

The final match of this year’s FCC Championships will be played Friday morning 9am. Carri and Kendra Wurm play Gail Steffen and Gina Luginbill to decide the title for the 6.5 Ladies doubles division.

First of Three

This morning in front of an enthusiastic audience (Dianne, that means you), defending champions Jane Heck and Susie Spragg pulled out a hard-fought battle against Jane Bohnlein and Pam Hardy.  The score read 6-1, 6-4, but the match “felt” close than that.  At times the wind was a significant factor, but the quality of tennis was outstanding. All four contestants produced amazing shot-making under tremendous pressure.

With two more finals to go, this will be a great week at the FCC Courts.   Here’s the schedule of remaining matches:
  • Thursday 6:30pm - Men’s 7.0 Final.
  • Friday 9am - Ladies 6.5 Final.
