Advantage FCC

The weather Gods are in our corner this spring! Court prep continues to progress at unprecedented rates.  The weather since March 15 has allowed me and BC to get a lot of work done ahead of schedule.  Maintenance Director Todd has installed protective screening on the main patio.  This will allow members to hang out on the patio while the courts are being watered without getting all wet!

Here’s some photos from this morning’s prep work:
Court 1 & 2 - These two courts are more popular for member play.  Therefore, I spend extra time checking them for imperfections and removing every piece of dead material I see before the new Har-Tru is applied.

Court 3 & 4 - I spent a few extra hours this spring clearing the surface of stone is exposed due to natural erosion of the base material. In future years we will need to perform a laser-guided tapering of the courts. Re-setting the grade to the proper slope is important for safer play and more consistent drainage.

My trusty GOGO. We’ve been through a lot together, but I must admit, it would be nice to have a roof for those hot, sunny days.

BC has rolled the courts numerous times this spring. He will roll north/south direction a lot because once the nets go up in May we can’t roll in that direction any longer! We must compact the base at just the right firmness before new material and lines are installed in coming weeks.

Red Sky at Night, Tennis Player’s Delight

Monday evening showed signs of improving weather.  If old sailors are correct, the weather should improve Tuesday.  Here’s some photos I took Monday night.

The sun just touches the treetops and clubhouse chimney before setting.

Courts are in great shape.

10/15 - FROST WARNING !

Nothing disrupts the safety of a clay court more than frost.  If heavy enough to penetrate the ground, frost will cause a “heaving” action where the nails that hold down the lines will actually lift the lines out of the court, causing obvious safety hazards.

If you plan on playing outdoors at FCC this week, please inspect your court carefully.   Unfortunately, if this weather pattern continues I will have no choice but to remove the lines for the 2019 season so no one gets injured.

Unidentified Object

A massive, flaming yellow sphere was seen in the east sky this morning.  Not sure what it could be. Heard it may be around for a couple days.   Advice? Take full advantage.  Not sure how long this May last.

No Way This is Real

I didn’t think it was possible, but the weather forecast is even colder than Monday’s.

Even so, we will hold the Tuesday 6:30 match play as long as the courts don’t take on any moisture through the day.   Check in here before heading over to the courts in case of cancellation.
